Fridge or freezer after a power outage in Waterloo: what to keep, and when the appliance is the problem
When the power goes out in Waterloo, two questions follow: is the food still safe, and is the fridge still working properly once the lights come back on? Public health guidance answers the first. The second takes a few simple checks.

During the outage: keep the doors shut
Public health guidance is consistent: do not open the fridge or freezer unless you have to. With the doors closed, Toronto Public Health says food stays safe for about:
- 4 hours in the refrigerator
- 48 hours in a full freezer
- 24 hours in a half-full freezer
Waterloo Region's emergency preparedness guidance gives similar numbers: two to four hours for an unopened fridge, about one day for a half-full freezer and two days for a full one. A full freezer holds its temperature longer because the frozen food keeps itself cold. If you have warning of a long outage, filling empty freezer space with containers of water frozen ahead of time helps.
Check whether the outage is local to your house or wider. Enova Power's outage map shows current outages and estimated restoration times; if your address is not listed, Enova asks you to call 226-896-2200. If only your house is out, check your panel for a tripped main breaker first.
When the power comes back: what to keep and what to throw out
- Refrigerator food should feel cold to the touch. If the power was out for more than about four hours and the door was opened, throw out perishables: meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, leftovers and cut produce.
- Freezer food that still has ice crystals, or is still at 4°C or colder, can be refrozen.
- Anything with an unusual smell, colour or texture goes. Do not taste food to test it. When in doubt, throw it out.
An inexpensive appliance thermometer in both compartments takes the guesswork out of this. The fridge should be at or below 4°C.
Did the outage damage the fridge?
Most fridges come back from an outage without trouble. The failures that do happen tend to come from the way power returns: a brief flicker, several quick on-off cycles, or low voltage while a line is being repaired. Signs something is wrong:
- Nothing at all. No light, no display, no fan. Check the outlet with a lamp and the breaker at the panel before assuming the fridge is dead. On some models the control board or its fuse fails when power returns.
- Light and display work but no cooling after several hours. The compressor may be trying to start and failing; listen for a click every few minutes from the back. That points to the start relay or overload, a common and usually worthwhile repair, or less often the compressor itself.
- Freezer cold, fridge warm. Often a stalled evaporator fan or an iced-over coil that was already developing before the outage.
- Error code on the display. Write it down with the model number. It narrows the diagnosis before anyone arrives.
- Ice maker or water dispenser stopped. The water inlet valve can stick after an outage, and hard water scale on its screen makes it more likely.
Give a fridge time before judging it. After an outage, a fridge that was fully warm can take several hours or more to get back down to temperature, longer if it is packed with warm food. Leave the doors closed and check the thermometer after a few hours.
What to tell the technician
A few details speed up the diagnosis: how long the power was out, whether it flickered on and off before coming back, what the fridge did when power returned (silent, clicking, humming, fan running), the temperatures on your thermometer, and the model number from the label inside the fresh food compartment. Also mention whether any other appliances or electronics in the house misbehaved, since that points to a supply problem rather than the fridge.
Protecting the fridge for the next outage
- Unplug or switch off the fridge and freezer during a long outage if the power is flickering, and plug back in once the supply is steady.
- Do not run them from a generator through a damaged circuit. If you use a portable generator, plug the fridge straight into it with a grounded extension cord, and keep the generator outdoors, away from doors and windows. Enova Power warns that running a generator or barbecue indoors can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Keep the coils clean. A fridge with dusty condenser coils works harder to recover after an outage.
Condos, rentals and chest freezers
In an uptown Waterloo condo, check with building management before assuming the fridge failed; some buildings have partial outages affecting only certain circuits. Landlords with several houses near the universities can use rental property appliance service to have tenants book directly while the owner approves the repair. For basement chest freezers in Columbia Forest or out in Elmira, check that the freezer actually restarted after every outage. If it is on a GFCI outlet or a circuit that tripped, it can sit off unnoticed for days.
