Stove, Oven and Range Repair in Waterloo

Ovens and ranges are simple machines that fail in simple ways, and most of them are worth fixing. The one hard rule is that anything on the gas side is done only by someone licensed to do it.

A range is one of the longest-lived appliances in a house. The electric ranges in older Elmira and St. Jacobs kitchens and the century homes around uptown are often twenty or thirty years old and still cooking, because an element or a thermostat is all they have ever needed. Newer ranges in Laurelwood and Columbia Forest kitchens have electronic controls, convection fans and self-clean cycles, which add features and add failure points. Gas ranges add a fuel system that is regulated for good reason.

Electric ovens: not heating or heating wrong

• Bake or broil element. The most common oven repair. A visible break, blister or a spot that glows brighter than the rest confirms it. Simple replacement.
• Temperature sensor or thermostat. An oven that runs hot or cold, or that throws a sensor error code, usually needs the sensor. On older ranges with a dial thermostat, the thermostat itself.
• Control board and relays. Oven dead but cooktop works, or the display is flashing. On newer ranges the board's relay for the element fails. Boards are replaced only after the element and sensor are ruled out, because the board is the expensive part.
• Convection fan. A rattle or no air movement in convection mode. Motor or fan blade.
• Self-clean lockout. A self-clean cycle that ended with the door locked and the oven dead has usually blown a thermal fuse or damaged the door lock motor. Both are repairable. Self-clean is hard on an older oven, and the technician will say whether to keep using it.

Electric cooktops

Coil elements fail and are replaced in a minute. Their receptacles burn and need replacing too, which is the fault when a new coil does not work either. Smooth glass-top elements are radiant ribbons under the glass and fail individually; the glass itself cracks from impact or from a pot boiling over onto a hot surface, and a cracked top is replaced as a whole panel, which on some ranges is the repair-or-replace moment. Induction cooktops have their own generator boards and are diagnosed from the error codes.

Doors, hinges, glass and gaskets

An oven door that will not close, that sags, or that has a torn gasket loses heat into the kitchen and cooks unevenly. Hinges and gaskets are routine. Inner door glass that has shattered, usually after a self-clean cycle or a knock, is replaced as a panel.

Gas ranges and cooktops: who does the work

A gas range has burners, igniters, a spark module, an oven igniter or glow bar, a safety valve, and a gas supply with a shut-off. Some faults on a gas range are electrical in nature, such as a spark module that clicks continuously. But any repair that involves the gas valve, the burner assemblies, the oven igniter and safety valve, the regulator or the supply connection is fuel work, and in Ontario it is done only by a technician holding the applicable licence from the Technical Standards and Safety Authority. When you book a gas range repair, that is confirmed before anyone is dispatched. If you smell gas, do not book a repair: leave the house and call your gas utility's emergency line first.

Running a new gas line, converting an appliance between natural gas and propane, or connecting a newly bought range is installation, not repair, and is a different job.

Wall ovens and built-in cooktops

The kitchens renovated in Laurelwood, Vista Hills and uptown condos often have a separate wall oven and cooktop. Wall ovens have the same elements, sensors and boards as a range but have to come out of the cabinet to be serviced, which is a two-person job on a double oven. Built-in cooktops are serviced from above or below depending on the model. The booking asks for the model so the technician knows what they are pulling out.

Older ranges in older houses

The 1980s and 90s electric ranges in St. Jacobs, Elmira and around Mary-Allen are often the easiest repairs in this trade: an element, a thermostat, a switch. They are worth doing. The one thing to check is the supply. An older range receptacle or a house with an older panel can have a faulty connection that mimics a range fault, and if the problem is in the wall rather than the appliance, it is electrical work through the ESA and is referred to a licensed electrical contractor.

Student rentals

Ranges in rentals get elements broken, knobs snapped off, doors sprung and drip pans lost. Most of it is cheap to put right, and landlords get a written report per unit so the decision is easy. A rental range with a control board failure on a cheap model is usually replaced, and the report says so.
